Introduction

Hello! Firstly, thanks for looking at this page and please read on! My name is Kimberley Elderton and I'm an artist working with knitting. I also work with video and the internet to document my work which has so far consisted mainly of socially engaged performance pieces (see my website for more details: www.uwic.ac.uk/csad/timebased/ - click on students then my name). This new project is a little different. I am still fascinated by knitting and I realised at the beginning of this year that I'm going to need to tighten my purse strings a little as three years of student life has taken it's toll on the bank balance! So I decided that I would have to knit everything that I want instead. Obviously the irony is that the things I knit are useless in terms of function. The process also brings up all sorts of issues: independence, self sufficiency, greed, consumerism, patience, appreciation of time, appreciation of skill - and loads more which will hopefully be discussed in the postings as the blog grows. I hope all of you enjoy learning about and contributing to this project.

Today I feel like I’m on “The Apprentice” and that I’m project manager and our task is to produce a degree show and if it doesn’t all go smoothly I’m the one that’s going to get dragged into the boardroom and get fired! However, I am slowly coming to realize through the course of the day that actually my work is fine and will be polished for the show and if other people’s work isn’t then I shouldn’t worry about it to the extent that I am.
I’ve finished knitting the controller! Horray! I finished all the knitting yesterday and then today I have sewn it all together. I have also pinned the cover of the Playstation on a bit better because on some of the corners it wasn’t sitting properly. I’m now just printing off a template of the writing “P L A Y S T A T I O N 3” which is on the front of the console so I can start with the embroidery now. I also need to pop into a fabric shop on the way home to try and find some silver or mirrored fabric as there is a small strip of mirrored plastic on the Playstation which I think would look better done in fabric rather than embroidery.
I think I have solved the touch display issue too. I’m going to use some barriers but I’m going to knit them as I realized that knitting up a rope can be done with finger knitting which takes no time at all, and in fact I think I’ve already got a rope of red finger knitting. I think for the posts – actually, haven’t quite decided what will be best for the posts yet. I’d like to cover them in knitting too but time is the issue with that. Hmmm, I’ll have to think about that for a bit longer.
